Blu Ray Media: Kodak Review

Blu Ray blank media guide : Best Blu Ray media brands
Best Blu Ray Media Brands Part 5: Kodak Media/ Discs Review

While there are very few reviews available today of Kodak Blu Ray media (exactly 4 as we are going to publication), we know a lot about Kodak as a blank media brand, and about the media it factors. Kodak has a very poor record as a blank media brand, and carries the lowest user rating of all media brands in the DVD media market - 57%. We found Kodak Blu Ray media in BD-R format only. The media it factors, probably from CMC Magnetics, with an MID of PHILIP-R04-00, has an 83% overall rating, but has a very high variability in quality, going from a low of 67% to a high of 93%. We reviewed it here, and concluded that it was not archival quality, and that we could not recommend it independently of the brand that outsources it.

The Kodak Blu Ray media we found and surveyed was limited to BD-R only (no 50GB DL discs, no BD-RE rewritables). It had a 100% rating from 4 original user reviews, which we compounded to its 83% media manufacturer rating with a 75%-25% ratio, according to our standard Blu Ray media process. To create our predictive quality rating for Kodak Blu Ray media, we added an equivalent of 10 user reviews with the branded DVD media rating of 67%. Because of the low number of user reviews, we lowered the resulting rating by 14%, in order to obtain a margin of error (with 95% certainty) of less than 5% downwards. Kodak's resulting rating is 58%, the lowest predictive quality rating in the Blu Ray media market. As user reviews accumulate and the statistical margin of error decreases, this rating should go up by 10% to 20%.

Conclusions
  • Kodak's Blu Ray media predictive quality rating is 58%, second lowest of all Blu Ray media.
  • Kodak's quality rating should trend up as more user reviews appear.
  • Kodak's DVD media have the lowest rating in DVD market. There is no reason to believe that its Blue Ray media will be significantly better.
  • Kodak's outsourced media is not of archival quality, and we feel that there are better choices for the same cost.
  • we do not recommend Kodak Blu Ray media for any use at this time.
