Blu Ray Media: Optical Quantum Review

Blu Ray blank media guide : Best Blu Ray media brands
Best Blu Ray Media Brands Part 9: Optical Quantum Media/ Discs Review

Optical Quantum is the high end media brand for Taiwanese manufacturer VinPower, which also sells media products under its own brand name.  Both Optical Quantum and VinPower have poor quality ratings in the DVD media market. In fact, Optical Quantum scores slightly lower than VinPower for DVD products, although the difference is not statistically significant given the comparatively low number of user reviews for both product lines in the DVD blank media market. We found Optical Quantum Blu Ray media in quantity in BD-R and BD-RE formats. Both Optical Quantum and VinPower factor Philips Blu Ray media, which has an 83% overall rating, but a very high variability in quality, going from a low of 67% to a high of 93%. We reviewed it  here, and concluded that it was not archival quality, and that we could not recommend it independently of the brand that outsources it. The huge surprise that Optical Quantum brings is that it scores an outstanding 93% in uncorrected approval ratings, with excellent statistical validity and less than 4% margin of error (with 95% certainty). This is all the more remarkable, since VinPower, factoring the same media, scores a low uncorrected 78%.

How can Optical Quantum score so high, when VinPower, factoring the same media, scores so low, and when both have large numbers of user reviews (Optical Quantum in particular)? We discussed this mystery in depth  here. How can Philips factored media have such variability in quality? The conclusion we came to is that the Philips-labeled media is probably manufactured by a Chinese manufacturer (CMC Magnetics) known for its very high variability. If that is the case, it is likely that Optical Quantum will eventually run into a bad batch and see a significant drop in its user-reported quality. In the mean time, however, we cannot avoid being impressed by Optical Quantum's high quality in the Blu Ray arena.

Thanks to Optical Quantum's reasonable pricing, we were able to find a large number of user reviews (199) for its Blu Ray media, averaging a very high 93% approval rating. We compounded the brand's rating to its 83% media manufacturer rating, with a 75%-25% ratio, according to our standard Blu Ray media process. To create our predictive quality rating for Optical Quantum Blu Ray media, we added an equivalent of 10 user reviews with the brand's DVD media rating of 77%. Optical Quantum's resulting rating is 87%, an astonishingly good rating in the Blu Ray media market for a factored product.

Conclusions
  • Optical Quantum's Blu Ray media predictive quality rating is 87%, a very good rating in the Blu Ray media industry, and the best of all factored products.
  • Optical Quantum's DVD media have a mediocre rating in the DVD market.
  • Optical Quantum's outsourced media (Philips) is not of archival quality, its average reliability across all brands that factor it is significantly lower than Optical Quantum's, and its variability is high.
  • For these reasons, we cannot recommend Optical Quantum for archival purposes. At the same time, we recognize the high quality rating achieved by the brand so far. We believe that Optical Quantum Blu Ray media products may be used for non archival purposes with care, when they are significantly less expensive than other branded products sold by their own OEM under its name, as long as one keeps a sharp lookout on recent user reviews for the brand. It might be simply a matter of time before Optical Quantum receives a poor media batch that could significantly affect quality ratings.
