Not being able to easily open multiple windows of Gmail is one of my biggest frustrations. Gmail just pushed out an update that allows you to open a new window quickly (no more load bar...) from the Compose screen (see above) or from the main screen (see below).
This makes a big difference in efficiency: no more need to open a new tab with a Gmail URL. Check out the original Gmail blog post which more information!
